Penny Howard was one year old when her Uncle was killed in action during the Vietnam War. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts to save others. Her story and many others confirm the importance of Wreaths Across America’s mission.
Penny Howard: Gold Star Niece
My uncle Thomas J. McMahon was killed in Vietnam. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and as part of that they named a school in Lewiston, Maine after him.
I’ve always been passionate about the veterans and remembering, honoring, and teaching, and that’s what wreaths does.
My mission was to get my dad, to bring my dad to Arlington, so that he could lay wreaths on his parents’ grave but also in memory of my uncle.
And so we just made it a tradition and a mission that that’s what we were gonna do. This is the least we can do to honor, and make sure that our future generations understand that sacrifice for our freedoms today.
